Need to get stronger, but can’t lift heavy yet?

After an injury or surgery, you’re often stuck in a frustrating spot:

  • Heavy weights hurt or aren’t safe yet

  • Light weights feel like they don’t do anything

  • You can feel your strength slipping away week by week

  • You’re worried about how far behind you’ll be

Blood flow restriction training, or BFR, helps close that gap.

What is BFR training?

BFR uses a specialized cuff around your upper arm or thigh. The cuff partly limits blood flow out of the working muscle while you exercise with light weights.

That makes light work feel much harder to your muscles, so you can build strength and size without the heavy loads your body isn’t ready for yet. We use medical-grade equipment that sets the pressure for you.

Who BFR can help

  • People recovering from surgery, like ACL reconstruction or other knee, hip, or shoulder procedures

  • Athletes who want to keep strength up while an injury heals

  • Tendon pain that doesn’t tolerate heavy loading yet

  • Active adults who want strength gains while easing joint stress

We screen everyone first. BFR isn’t right for everybody, and we’ll tell you if it isn’t a fit.

What a BFR session feels like

  • The cuff goes on and inflates to a pressure set for you

  • You do sets with light weights and higher reps

  • Your muscles burn and fatigue fast (that’s the point)

  • The cuff comes off between exercises, and the whole thing is short

It’s uncomfortable in a good-workout way, and it’s always done under supervision by a Doctor of Physical Therapy.

How BFR fits into your plan

We don’t guess…we assess. Your first visit is a full hour, 1-on-1 with a Doctor of Physical Therapy. From there, your plan follows our three steps:

FEEL BETTER: Calm it down. We calm things down and protect what’s healing while BFR keeps your muscles working.

MOVE BETTER: Rebuild it. BFR helps you build strength early, then we progress you toward normal training loads.

PERFORM BETTER: Keep it. We get you back to heavy lifting, running, and your sport, and we test your strength so you know you’re ready.

You’ll leave your first visit knowing what’s going on, what to do next, what to modify for now, and roughly how long it should take.

BFR Questions People Often Ask

Is BFR safe?

When it’s done with the right equipment and a proper health screen, research supports BFR as safe for most people. We review your health history first and skip it if it isn’t right for you.

Does it hurt?

Your muscles will burn and feel tired quickly. The cuff feels tight, but it shouldn’t be painful. We adjust as we go.

Can I do it at home?

We do BFR in the clinic with medical-grade equipment and supervision so the pressure and dosing are right for you.

Do you take insurance?

We’re an out-of-network provider, which lets us spend a full hour 1-on-1 with you. Many clients use HSA/FSA cards or submit our documentation to their insurance for possible reimbursement.
