Tight, painful muscles holding you back?

If a muscle has been tight or sore for a while, you’ve probably already tried:

  • Foam rolling and a massage gun

  • Stretching before and after workouts

  • A massage that felt great… for a day

  • Pushing through and hoping it lets go

Dry needling is one more tool we can use to calm that muscle down, so you can move better and get more out of your rehab and training.

What is dry needling?

Dry needling uses a very thin, solid filament needle placed into a tight or sensitive spot in a muscle. The goal is to reduce pain and muscle tension so you can move more freely.

It’s called “dry” because nothing is injected. It’s also different from acupuncture: dry needling is based on modern anatomy and how your muscles and nerves work, and we use it as part of a full physical therapy plan.

Who dry needling can help

We commonly use it for:

  • Neck and upper back tightness, including tension that comes with headaches

  • Low back and glute pain

  • Shoulder pain from lifting, throwing, or overhead work

  • Hip, hamstring, and calf tightness in runners

  • Elbow and forearm pain from gripping and lifting

Not everyone needs it. We’ll tell you honestly whether it’s a good fit for you.

What to expect

  • A full assessment first, so we know where and why to use it

  • You may feel a quick twitch or a deep ache in the muscle, which usually passes fast

  • Some people feel sore for a day or two, like after a hard workout

  • We follow it with movement and strength work so the change sticks

Dry needling is never the whole plan. It opens a window so the rest of your plan works better.

Who does the needling

Every dry needling treatment at Training Nation is done by a Doctor of Physical Therapy who is certified in dry needling: Dr. Luke, Dr. April, Dr. Alex, and Dr. Alicia.

How it fits into your plan

We don’t guess…we assess. Your first visit is a full hour, 1-on-1 with a Doctor of Physical Therapy. From there, your plan follows our three steps:

FEEL BETTER: Calm it down. Dry needling, hands-on treatment, and movement to calm down tight, painful muscles.

MOVE BETTER: Rebuild it. We build strength and mobility around the problem area so it stops getting overloaded.

PERFORM BETTER: Keep it. We progress you back to full training with a plan to keep it that way.

You’ll leave your first visit knowing what’s going on, what to do next, what to modify for now, and roughly how long it should take.

Dry Needling Questions People Often Ask

Does it hurt?

Most people feel the needle very little. You may feel a twitch or a deep ache in the muscle for a moment. We check in with you the whole time.

Is it the same as acupuncture?

No. Both use thin needles, but dry needling is based on modern anatomy and targets specific muscles as part of a physical therapy plan.

Is it safe?

In trained hands, dry needling is considered safe. We screen your health history before we use it and skip it if it isn’t right for you.

Do you take insurance?

We’re an out-of-network provider, which lets us spend a full hour 1-on-1 with you. Many clients use HSA/FSA cards or submit our documentation to their insurance for possible reimbursement.
