Back pain that keeps coming back? Let’s fix the cause.

If your low back has been bugging you, you’ve probably already tried a few things:

  • Resting it for a week

  • Skipping deadlifts, squats, or anything that bends you forward

  • Stretching, foam rolling, heat or ice

  • Telling yourself “it’ll calm down, it always does”

Honestly? Sometimes it does calm down. Then you pick up a laundry basket, a barbell, or your kid… and it’s back.

Low back pain is one of the most common reasons people call our Centerville clinic. It’s also one of the most frustrating, because it touches everything you do.

What low back pain feels like

Low back pain doesn’t usually start as something major. It tends to show up as:

  • Stiffness getting out of bed or out of the car

  • Pain bending forward to tie your shoes or pick something up

  • A tight, achy back after deadlifts, kettlebell swings, or rowing

  • Pain that gets worse after sitting at a desk or driving

  • A back that feels “fragile,” like one wrong move will set it off

That last one is the big one. When you stop trusting your back, you start avoiding things: workouts, yard work, playing on the floor with your kids. That’s what we want to change.

Why your back hurts (and why it’s probably not just your back)

Here’s what most people never hear: your low back is usually doing extra work for something else.

We commonly see:

  • Hips that are stiff or not strong enough, so your back bends when your hips should

  • A core that works fine sitting still but not under load

  • Lifting or hinging habits that put stress in the same spot over and over

  • Training that ramped up faster than your body was ready for

  • Being afraid to move, which makes your back stiffer and more sensitive (this one is real, and it’s fixable)

That’s why rest and stretching only go so far. They calm it down, but they don’t change what’s loading it.

Why your back pain keeps coming back

Most people follow a pretty similar pattern:

01 — You back off. You skip workouts, stop lifting, and baby it for a while.
02 — It feels better. The pain settles and you think you’re in the clear.
03 — You go back to normal. Same lifts, same habits, same load.
04 — It flares up again. Nothing about how your back handles stress has changed.

That cycle can go on for months… sometimes years. Until what’s loading your back changes, it keeps coming back.

Her story

A mom from Centerville came to us after living with low back pain. She couldn’t lift. She couldn’t bend forward without pain. And the one that hurt most: she couldn’t play on the playground with her 11-year-old daughter.

She told us she felt lost. She didn’t know what to do next, and she was starting to feel hopeless about it.

We listened first. Then we built a plan around what she wanted back.

Today she’s lifting again, bending without thinking twice, and back on the playground with her daughter. And she didn’t stop there: she now coaches and trains people of her own here in Centerville. She went from lost and hopeless to feeling heard, hopeful, and confident. That’s the whole point.

How we help

We don’t guess…we assess. Your first visit is a full hour, 1-on-1 with a Doctor of Physical Therapy. From there, your plan follows our three steps:

FEEL BETTER: Calm it down. Hands-on treatment, movement, and simple strategies to reduce pain. You also get a clear explanation of what’s going on, so you’re not scared of your back.

MOVE BETTER: Rebuild it. We look at how you hinge, squat, lift, and bend. Then we build hip strength, core control, and mobility so your back stops taking all the stress.

PERFORM BETTER: Keep it. We progress you back to heavy lifts, your classes, your sport, and life at home, with a plan to keep your back strong for the long haul.

You’ll leave your first visit knowing what’s going on, what to do next, what to modify for now, and roughly how long it should take.

Low Back Questions People Often Ask

When should I stop “resting” and get it looked at?

If your back has bothered you for a few weeks, keeps coming back, or is changing how you move, it’s worth getting looked at now, before it becomes a bigger issue.

Do I need to stop lifting?

NO! PLEASE keep training. We can usually adjust things so you keep moving safely. Worst case, you hold off on one movement while you keep training everything else.

Do I need a referral or an MRI?

In Ohio, you don’t need a referral to see a physical therapist. Many people with low back pain can start PT without imaging. If anything in your assessment suggests you should see a physician or get imaging, we’ll tell you and point you in the right direction.

Do you take insurance?

We’re an out-of-network provider, which lets us spend a full hour 1-on-1 with you. Many clients use HSA/FSA cards or submit our documentation to their insurance for possible reimbursement.
