Upper back pain that won’t let go? Let’s fix the cause.
If your upper or mid back has been bugging you, you’ve probably already tried:
Foam rolling or a lacrosse ball against the wall
Stretching your chest and shoulders
Massage or a chiropractic adjustment
Sitting up straighter (for about ten minutes)
Those can feel great in the moment. Then you sit through a long meeting, do a heavy row, or twist to grab something from the back seat… and it’s back.
What upper and mid back pain feels like
It usually shows up as:
A knot or burning ache between your shoulder blades
Pain or tightness when you take a deep breath
Stiffness after sitting at a desk or driving
Pain during rows, pull-ups, or overhead work
A sharp catch when you twist or reach
It’s the kind of pain that makes you shift in your seat all day and second-guess your upper body workouts.
Why your upper back hurts
Your mid back (your thoracic spine) is built to rotate and extend. When it stops doing that well, the muscles around it work overtime. We commonly see:
A mid back that’s gotten stiff from hours in the same position
Upper back muscles that are strong for a moment but tire out fast
Breathing and bracing habits that keep everything tight
Training volume that jumped faster than your body could adapt
Shoulders and neck that pass extra stress down the chain
Rolling it out loosens things for a bit. It doesn’t change how your back handles your day or your training.
Why your upper back pain keeps coming back
Most people follow a pretty similar pattern:
01 — You roll it out. A ball, a foam roller, a good stretch.
02 — It loosens up. The knot settles down.
03 — You go back to normal. Same desk, same workouts, same habits.
04 — The knot comes back. Your upper back still doesn’t move or hold up the way it needs to.
That cycle can go on for years if nobody looks at the bigger picture.
How we help
We don’t guess…we assess. Your first visit is a full hour, 1-on-1 with a Doctor of Physical Therapy. From there, your plan follows our three steps:
FEEL BETTER: Calm it down. Hands-on treatment, breathing and mobility work, and simple changes to your workday so the pain settles down.
MOVE BETTER: Rebuild it. We restore how your mid back rotates and extends, then build real endurance in your upper back and shoulder blades so they can hold up all day.
PERFORM BETTER: Keep it. We progress you back to heavy rows, pull-ups, overhead lifts, and long workdays, with a plan to keep your back moving well.
You’ll leave your first visit knowing what’s going on, what to do next, what to modify for now, and roughly how long it should take.

Upper Back Questions People Often Ask
When should I get it looked at?
If the pain has hung around for a few weeks, keeps coming back, or makes it hard to breathe deeply or sleep, it’s worth getting looked at. Chest pain, shortness of breath, or pain with no clear cause should be checked by a physician right away.
Do I need to stop training?
NO! PLEASE keep training. We can usually adjust things so you keep moving safely. Worst case, you hold off on one movement while you keep training everything else.
Is my posture the problem?
Posture is rarely the whole story. Your body is built to move, and staying in any one position too long can get uncomfortable. We focus on giving your back more options and more strength.
Do you take insurance?
We’re an out-of-network provider, which lets us spend a full hour 1-on-1 with you. Many clients use HSA/FSA cards or submit our documentation to their insurance for possible reimbursement.
